Wayanad

Wayanad is an area in Kerala which still preserves its virgin land scape and greenery. On a clear day a view of the district from the hill tops will give us the impression that we are in a fairy land. Wayanad is known for its pristine natural beauty and the large population of tribal people.
This 950 acre virgin uninhabited island on the tributaries of Kabini river is an excellent picnic spot. No good roads are there. So one has to walk for 4 km through dense forests to reach the location.
Lakkidi is the gateway to wayanad. Situated at 700 mts above sea level the place is characterised by lofty peaks, gurgling streams and waterfalls, luxuriant forest and winding hill roads.
Looking for tranquility- this is the place. This perennial fresh water lake surrounded by medows and trees, is one of the few reservoirs of Wayanad.Boating facilities are available here.
The two caves which dates back to pre historic periods house some New Stone Age pictoral writings on their walls. This gives evidence of a civilization that existed here during those times. The caves can be accessed only by a trek for over 2 kms from Edakkal. The generic meaning of cave is not applicable to the caves in Edakkal. These are huge rocks set apart at the bottom but gradually comes together and meets at the top thus forming a cave like space is between. Morning is the best time to visit the caves as the sunlight directly falls at the walls at this time. Drawings engraved into the rocks are believed to belong to the magalithic period.
Veera Pazhassi Raja - known as the Lion of Kerala who led gorilla war fare against the British East India Company has his memorial erected here.
This jain temple is located in the slopes of Vellarimala and is dedicated to the third Thirthankara of the Jain faith Swamy Paraswanatha. The mirrors inside the temple draw beautiful image patterns of the icons on the walls and on the Sanctum Sanctorum.
