The well preserved granite fort in the heart of Palakkad town dates back to 1766 AD and was built by Haidar Ali of Mysore. Later it was captured by British and then by Zamorin. Today it is preserved by the Archeological survey of India.

The Western Ghats form a natural depression in the district of Palakkad. This depression with a width of 35-40 kilometers connects Kerala with the plains of Tamil Nadu. Palakkad popular for its paddy cultivation is known as the ‘Granery of Kerala’. The district lies at the foot of the Western Ghats and is comprised of midlands and highland areas. The high lands are mostly covered with forests and Nelliampathy forest range forms a substantial part of it. The Paramabikulam wild life Sanctury and the Silent Valley national park are the two main wildlife reserves in the district.

This is one of the most famous picnic spots in the state. The beautifully landscaped gardens, picturesque dam and rope way make it a very attractive spot. Boating facility is available in the dam from 10.00 to 18.00 hrs. A fresh water aquarium and snake park are other attractions here. The rope way functions from 10.00 to 13.00 and 14.30 to 20.00 hrs.

This is the habitat of a large number of tribes like the Irulas and Mudugars. As a place where modernity is miles away the virgin land scape, mountains, rivers and forests forms a beautiful synthesis.
