This landlocked district is the most nature rich district in Kerala. Even though a large area of this mountain land has been transformed into tea, coffee, pepper and eucalyptus plantations, the district still preserves a substantial stretch of original forest land. Idukki offers diverse attraction like wild life sancturies (Periyar, Eravikulam, and Idukki wild life sanctury). Hill stations (Munnar, Peerumedu and Vagamon) spice plantations, mountain treks, elephant ride etc
Idukki arch dam is the first of its kind in Asia and second in the world. The dam is constructed across the Periyar river between two huge granite hills - The Kuravan and Kurathi, which are respectively 550 feet and 650 feet in height. The area which lies 3917 feet above sea level provides excellent views of sun set and sun rise.
